Since I needed to travel to Alaska for Redpaw, we decided to make it a working vacation and Michelle came along. My main reason for travelling was to attend the Alaska Dog Musher's Association annual symposium and trade fair in Fairbanks.
We flew up to Anchorage on Monday. Tuesday morning we set off to tackle Flat Top Mountain, the most popular mountain hike in Alaska. Thankfully, the traffic on the trail was light since tourist season is long over, yet it was just barely early enough to avoid the snow cover. Rated a medium to strenuous hike, the trail to the top is about 1.5 miles long and climbs just over 1200 feet in altitude. The last couple hundred feet must be climbed, though rope is not required. It was pretty hair-raising, though, and not for the faint of heart.
I was very proud of Michelle for sticking it out to make the climb to the top despite her asthma and the fact we were tired from the long flights the day before. It was definitely worth it for both of us, since the view (from 3500') of Anchorage and the surrounding mountain ranges was breathtaking. We lucked out and had clear weather in the direction of the Alaskan Range so we were able to see Denali (Mt. McKinley) well.
